Sixty-Six

for Bryce

Some men your age
slide into a red Mustang
top down
to travel the mythic road
feel the wind in phantom hair
and the land open wide
with possibility

Listen, baby:
you’re light years ahead
Chicago, St. Louis, and Tulsa
topple in your wake
as you surge along
with nothing to prove
never looking back

Take me with you!
I’ll slipstream and catch you in Amarillo
no need to stop
nestled close
we’ll shoot for the coast
where some say the road ends
others just keep on driving
