lovers leap
Dan Sicoli

but none tempting the fate of physics
like the courtship plummet
of the white-throated swift

quick by wing
faster in cliff swoop
descending through a column of air
pressing intimacy
and receding seconds before the rocks

all to impress
a mate

we risk
but a meager rebuff
or perhaps a chipped ego
when a flash of bravado and
a confident grin fail

nothing close to absolute peril

Dan Sicoli, of Niagara Falls, NY, might be found in a local gin mill banging an old Gibson with a garage rock band. Between his editorial duties with
Slipstream, he enjoys oven-drying his home-grown plum tomatoes and hiking. He has authored two poetry chapbooks from Pudding House Publications: Pagan Supper and the allegories. Recently, his poems have appeared in Angel Dust, Evening Street Review, I-70 Review, and Misfits.
