lovers leap
Dan Sicoli
but none tempting the fate of physics
like the courtship plummet
of the white-throated swift
quick by wing
faster in cliff swoop
descending through a column of air
pressing intimacy
and receding seconds before the rocks
all to impress
a mate
we risk
but a meager rebuff
or perhaps a chipped ego
when a flash of bravado and
a confident grin fail
nothing close to absolute peril
—
